A CHAMPION basketball team has met the Mayor of Worcester to celebrate its success.

The University of Worcester’s men’s basketball team was crowned British Universities and Colleges Sport champions for the fifth time earlier this year after beating Durham 76-70 in the final of the annual contest.

The team visited the mayor’s parlour at the Guildhall in Worcester and spent time chatting with the mayor and mayoress, as well as touring of the historic venue in High Street.

Mick Donovan, head of the university’s institute of sport and exercise science, said: “It is the fifth time in the last seven years that Worcester has now won the basketball championships, a clear demonstration of the talent and commitment of our young players.”

The team was coached by Paul James, who is also head coach of the England men’s team and the ity’s British Basketball League side, Worcester Wolves.
