A MAN has been jailed for his part in a violent assault outside a Droitwich pub.

The court heard how a fight began between Harvey Pugh and another man outside The Talbot pub in Droitwich shortly before midnight on Friday, June 3.

Another man, Nelson Robertson, also intervened and attacked the man with whom Pugh was fighting and also the landlord of the Star and Garter pub, David Webb, who tried to protect the initial victim, the court was told.

Pugh, aged 21, of Little Hill Court, Droitwich, and Robertson, aged 21, of Nunnery Avenue, Droitwich, both admitted a public order offence and Robertson admitted assaulting Mr Webb.

Robertson suffered a black and swollen left eye in the fight and Pugh a cut chin and injuries to the back of his head and forehead.

Matt Dodson, prosecuting, said Pugh punched the initial victim several times to the head and body during the incident before Robertson joined in the attack, kicking and punching him to the head and body.

Mr Dodson said: “A number of members of the public were watching but were not getting involved. Mr Webb, the landlord of the Star and Garter, got involved, so concerned was he by the state of the victim.”

Mr Dodson said Mr Webb pushed Robertson to the ground but Robertson got up and punched Mr Webb in the face and body several times.

Mr Dodson said Mr Webb again pushed Robertson who fell over a wall before a member of the public intervened. Robertson was removed from the area although he did aim a “kung-fu kick” at the original victim, Mr Dodson said.

Mr Dodson said the original victim did not want to pursue a complaint which is why the co-defendants were only charged with public order in relation to the initial assault.

Mr Webb suffered a three inch gash to the right-hand side of his face from his eye to his cheek bone.

Mark Sheward, representing Robertson, said his client had been out with his girlfriend when he decided to try and break up the fight.

“He was then struck by the injured party and struck out in self-defence,” he said. “Initially he admitted self-defence but he accepts he went over the top.”

Mr Sheward said Robertson was punched by Mr Webb, which Mr Dodson did not accept.

Susie Duncan, defending Pugh, said the fight started after the orginal victim invited her client outside.

Pugh was sentenced to 13 weeks in custody after a previous suspended sentence was activated.

Robertson will be sentenced on Wednesday, June 29, until which he was released on conditional bail.
