A YOUNG woman born unexpectedly at Upton Surgery has celebrated her 25th birthday.

Louise Humphrey, who was born at 4.30pm and weighed 7lb 13oz on June 19, 1986, is now 25 years old.

Her mum Ruth Humphrey, of Upton, was at the surgery when she gave birth.

She said: “Suddenly, I felt a trickle of water down my leg – my waters had broken. Not wishing to alarm the other expectant mothers, I slowly waddled up to the receptionist and whispered, “I think I need to see the doctor – now.”

Mrs Humphrey was ushered into Dr Wilson’s room and the first contractions began.

She decided to contact her husband, Michael, who was travelling back to his office in Gloucester, so he could take her to hospital.

She asaid: “As we waited, the contractions began to increase in frequency. By the time they were able to speak to Michael, there was concern that he would not be able to get from Gloucester to Upton in time. To be on the safe side it was decided to call for an ambulance.

“By the time Michael arrived, things were really hotting up.

“The ambulance team arrived shortly afterwards, but my labour was by now so far advanced that it was felt too dangerous to risk the journey to Ronkswood Hospital.

“Instead, I was moved into the treatment room and things prepared for the arrival. “Quite a crowd assembled to witness the arrival of Louise.

“I had two midwives, (Pauline Shuker and a colleague), Dr David Webster, who supervised proceedings, was joined by Dr Sue Everitt and the two ambulance men who supplied the vital gas and air – bless them.

Last, but not least, there was Michael, who although still somewhat taken aback by the speed of events, was so pleased and proud to be there to welcome his new daughter.”

Some six months later David Webster agreed to become Louise’s godfather at her christening at St Denys Church, Severn Stoke.
