A group of hard-working parents and grandparents have proved that community spirit is alive in one corner of Worcester.

The volunteers have created an outdoor classroom at Perry Wood Primary School based on donated items and recycled goods.

The area will be used for learning and play by year one pupils.

Zanete Jeynes, one of the grandmothers involved, said: “It was an outdoor classroom made about six or seven years ago but it was let go.

“We got together and had a meeting.

“There were no funds so we decided to beg what we could.”

Mrs Jeynes said donations came from companies including Radfords, The Entertainer and Tesco, while tins were donated by parents to create drums.

She said: “We painted all the fences.

“There’s a small courtyard and we painted hopscotches and created a maze.

“There were 10 or 12 of us and it took two weeks.

“It’s really lovely now.

“We opened last Friday and we went up to pick the children up and you could hear the drums down the road.

“We were thrilled.”

Jean Wilkinson, year one teacher, said: “The parental environment has been overwhelming.

“We didn’t expect to get such a good response.

“The parents were here for two solid weeks, day in, day out. It was just brilliant.”
