HUNDREDS of people – from teenagers to pensioners – were tattoed as part of a successful world record-breaking attempt.

One man even had 27 tattoos inked onto his back as more than £1,700 was raised for the Acorns Children’s Hospice in Worcester.

Mark Richmond and his wife Lisa, who own Gods of Ink II in Cathedral Plaza, Worcester, were inspired to raise money for the charity after their little boy Ayden was cared for at Acorns before he died of a rare illness aged just two.

The attempt to break the record of inking 802 tattoos in 24 hours was broken at the weekend as tattoo artist Gareth Mair managed 820.

Mrs Richmond, who organised the event, said: “We are absolutely buzzing, although it was quite emotional.

“There were a lot of tears because many people having tattoos done are in the same boat as us but it was really nice and I really enjoyed myself.

“Everybody’s done really well and I want to say a big thank you to everyone who got involved.”

Liz Whiting, of Little Hill, Droitwich, was one of those lining up to be part of the record-breaking attempt, along with three family members. Her granddaughter Megan was looked after at Acorns.

Ms Whiting, aged 66, said: “She used to go to Acorns and they are absolutely brilliant, so good.

“The care they give to the parents and grandparents and children – well, you cannot say how good it is. It’s brilliant.

“We are having the tattoos done on behalf of my granddaughter. I think it is a brilliant idea.”

About 400 people, aged from 18 up to 71, had tattoos between 11am on Saturday and 11am on Sunday. However, it was not just Gods of Ink II raising funds.

Across the walkway, staff at Heavenly Soles spa were painting faces and doing nails for Acorns.

And new café Mason, Olive and Bean not only agreed to stay open late but also gave 50p of each sale made in the evening to the hospice.

Meanwhile, the Richmonds are now preparing for their next fund raiser – a skydive next month.

Anyone wanting to sponsor them can call into either the Gods of Ink II studio or the International Ink Tattoo Studio in Astwood Road, Worcester.
