A TREE has been planted in Worcester to remember people who have disappeared in situations of violence and armed conflict.

The tree, which was planted in Gheluvelt Park, aims to draw attention to the work of the Red Cross both here in Worcestershire and overseas as it marks the Day of the Disappeared today.

The Red Cross international tracing and messaging service works across borders to reunite family members who have lost contact with each other.

Penny Thompson, international tracing and messaging services manager for Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire, said: “Here, much of our work is with people whose families were separated during the Second World War.

“The team is working on about 40 cases, with two successfully completed in the past 12 months.”

The British Red Cross is holding a tea and coffee drop-in for people today in the Guildhall until 4pm to let them know about the work of the tracing service.
