DESPITE a bone-dry summer flower, fruit and vegetable growers turned out a bumper crop of award winners.

There were flower shows in both Claines in Worcester and at Droitiwch over the weekend with thousands of entries between both the shows.

Entrants for both events have spent days carefully preparing their produce.

Krista Jerrold, of Claines Royal British Legion Flower Show, said Sunday’s event had been well attended and hotly contested with more entrants this year.

The winner of the President’s Shield for most points was Dan Robb with 89, while Tina Rimmel won the Rose Bowl for the ladies’ entries with 29 points.

The children’s section was won by Lucy Goode.

Mrs Jerrold said: “The show went very well and I would say the standard was high considering the dry summer we have had and then the heavy rain just before the show.

"We had about 40 exhibitors with most having multiple entries in the many different classes and the competition was keen between the expert gardeners. I do know that we had three more exhibitors than last year.”

Yesterday, the 63rd Droitwich Spa and District Horticultural Society annual open flower show was held in the town’s leisure centre with judging from 10.30am.

Growers were again joined by youngsters taking part in the blackboard art competition.

Val Jancey, society secretary, said: “The weather has been terrible for growers this year, but despite that we’ve had more than 500 entrants, and that’s smashing – that’s more than we had last year.”

Meanwhile, a collection of vintage motorbikes from the 1920s through to the 50s were on show at Tudor House, Worcester – including a 1928 Rudge Whitworth belonging to John Pringle.

“I bought it with my life savings when I was 21 – for £25,” he said. “It then died in 1953 or 1954 and over the next 45 years it slowly collapsed into a series of boxes until I retired and rebuilt it.

“I finally got it going again in 2006 but I didn’t ride it here today.

“I was hoping to, but it blew last weekend.”
