NEW fencing could be installed at Great Malvern railway station to prevent the continued theft of lead from its roof.
London Midland has applied to Malvern Hills District Council to put up fencing along the embankment on the Station Approach side of the building as a security measure following repeated thefts and associated damage to its roof.
In the last two years there have been six incidents at the listed station, costing thousands of pounds in replacement and repair costs.
Two of those incidents have been in the last 12 months.
Mike Hampson, head of facilities at London Midland, said: “We have had a spate of incidents of vandalism at the station.
“The building’s unusual design means that access to the roof is relatively easy.
“We are seeking permission to install measures that will enable us to better protect this historic listed building and preserve some of its original features from further damage.
“Our proposal includes design and materials that complement the original architecture.”
The total cost of the work will be about £10,000, with the Railway Heritage Fund contributing £4,000 of the bill, and it would take two weeks to complete.
Representations are to be made to the district council by Monday.
