FLOOD experts are to start work on the final part of a town’s riverside defences but it will mean some roads being closed.

Engineers will be in Upton-upon-Severn on Monday, September 5, to complete work on the New Street flood wall.

They will be installing a flood gate, rebuilding the footpath and laying brick cladding.

The road will be closed for up to four weeks but businesses will remain open and be accessible by a diversion.

Another group of engineers will start work at Waterside in the town on Monday, September 19.

They will be working throughout winter and into spring, hoping to complete the scheme by the end of April.

In preparation for the work, gas and telephone lines along Waterside will be diverted by National Grid and BT on, or soon after, September 5.

Waterside, between the King’s Head and the Swan pubs, will be closed from that date for the duration of the flood defence programme.

The road between the Plough and the King’s Head will be closed from Wednesday, September 19.

However, pedestrian and business access will remain open and the Environment Agency will be reviewing arrangements with businesses as the work progresses.
