LUNCHTIME at Worcester’s American diner had a rock and roll twist yesterday.

Detroit’s welcomed not one but two Buddy Hollys to perform some of the 50s superstar’s hits for customers as they tucked into their hamburgers.

Glen Joseph and Roger Rowley, who both play Buddy Holly, popped in with a couple of Crickets during a break in their schedule for Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which is at Malvern Theatres until Saturday.

Malvern is the first stop on a 14-week tour for the musical about the legendary star, who tragically died in a plane crash aged 22, during which Joseph and Rowley will alternate the role between them.

Rowley, who joined the show earlier this year, said: “We’ve just had a five-week break. It’s all coming back quickly – and it’s lovely to feel refreshed.

“It meant the audience were ready for us, and we were ready for them.”

It is Joseph’s second trip to Malvern as Buddy – his first was the last time the tour stopped at the theatre in 2008 – and he is delighted to be back in the town.

He said: “It is a very pleasurable area. It’s nice to get away into the hills.

“Each city we visit starts to look the same as the next one – but Malvern doesn’t look anything like anywhere else.”

Joseph was also delighted to be back playing the singer.

He said: “I got a call from the producer and I snatched his hand off.

“I was raised on Buddy – my dad is his biggest fan in the world.”
