THE “pride of the city” have taken their first steps in their Army careers at a ceremony in Worcester.

The youngsters from around the Midlands – including teenagers from Worcester, Malvern and Evesham – pledged allegiance to Queen and country in front of proud family and friends at Worcester’s Guildhall yesterday.

Among the recruits was 18-year-old Elizabeth Smith, from Warndon Villages, Worcester, who is about to start a career in the Royal Military Police.

“I wanted to join the civilian police but I also wanted to join the Army – so this was a good compromise,” said the former Worcester Sixth Form student.

“I quite like the responsibility it brings, and in the Army you can get so many qualifications as well.”

Fellow Warndon Villages resident Arron McMinn, aged 17, has joined the Queen’s Royal Hussars.

He said: “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. My family and friends want me to go in, so are very supportive.

“I chose to become a tank crewman because it’s more exciting.”

The Mayor of Worcester, Coun David Tibbutt, said he was delighted to be at the ceremony.

“It’s fantastic – these young people are the pride of the city and the pride of the county,” he said. The group will now begin their military career at the Army Foundation College, which will give them both military and vocational training while earning a salary at the same time.

Major Ken Kennedy, Army recruitment officer for the region, said: “The Army Foundation College provides a great opportunity for young people to train as soldiers, while also allowing them to gain further qualifications and continue with their education.

"In addition to gaining basic military training, they will also have the chance to further improve their numeracy and literary skills and earn an apprenticeship.

“I’m delighted that this group of local young people are taking this important first step towards a military career and I wish them all the best for the future.”
