A NEW show is hoping to shed light on a neglected part of Sir Edward Elgar's life.

A special stage presentation about the friendship, courtship and marriage between the famous composer and his wife Alice is currently being written and will be performed at the Malvern Theatres in May or early June next year.

Elgar was 29 years old when he met Alice Roberts. She was a major-general's daughter and an author of verse and prose fiction. Three years later they married and, as an engagement present, he gave her the short violin and piano piece Salut d'Amour. Alice lived in Redmarley on the borders of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

Catherine Moody, a relation of Victor Hume Moody, who in 1938 painted a portrait of Lady Hardwicke, has joined Edward Hardwicke and playwright Peter Sutton to bring the story to life. They hope to trace the sources of the composer's genius and look at how Alice influenced and inspired her husband.
