A KARATE teacher who denies having a sexual relationship with one of his 14-year-old students refuted every one of her allegations when he was interviewed by police, a court heard.

The girl from Kidderminster said in a statement he had first raped her and later tied her up and held a knife to her throat during sex sessions.

In the video interview, the girl, who has since died, also said that her mother had given her blessing to the relationship.

But after the police interview, she confided in a nurse she had not told the truth and asked what perverting the course of justice meant.

Jaspal Riat, now 48, of Denewood Avenue, Handsworth, Birmingham, denies two charges of rape, one of sexual assault and eight of having sexual activity with a child between February 2008 and May 2009. Riat declined to give evidence in court, and Judge Jamie Tabor said the jury was entitled to take an inference from that.

The court was told Riat had refuted all the girl’s allegations in a statement to police.

The statement was read out in court and in it he said he had never had any relationship with her.

“I never had sex with her on a trip to karate championships in Italy, and I never told her to deny any relationship between us,” he said.

"I never held a knife to her throat, never took her to a restaurant with one of her friends, and although I did stay at her home on one occasion, I did not sleep in her room.

"She never stayed with me for the weekend and I never had any relationship with her.”

The trial continues.
