DODGING danger is the theme of a safety campaign for 700 Worcester children.
Gorse Hill Primary School, Tolladine, is hosting five days of safety for 10 and 11-year-olds, to increase the awareness of the dangers which exist in the home and the community.
The event, dubbed Danger Dodgers, began yesterday and runs until Friday, September 22. It is a joint effort by a number of organisations including South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust, Worcester City Council, the county council's Road Safety Team, West Mercia Police, and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.
Teresa Cuthbert, who is in charge of health development at South Worcester-shire Primary Care Trust, said: "The event is very much in demand for Year 6 children and addresses some of the aims of Every Child Matters.
"Building on the success of previous years, we have been able to increase the participation of targeted schools within Worcester."
She said the aim was to teach children, in an interactive way, how to deal with dangers they might face in their everyday lives.
"This year, 18 Worcester schools, including three special schools, are involved. A total of approximately 700 children in all," she added.
"The children take part enthusiastically in exercises to drive home the safety messages by staging a variety of real-life scenarios and encouraging children to stop and think about the correct and safest course of action to take."
All 700 children attending the sessions will receive a pack of information for further discussion and follow up at school.
