WATER bottles are being given out free to Worcester primary school pupils this term.

Severn Trent Water is reminding parents and teachers about the importance of encouraging children to drink more water.

And to push the point, the company is offering free drinking water bottles to all Year One pupils at schools across the region. Severn Trent's education manager Derek Allder said: "It's not just during the hot weather that we need to keep drinking water.

"There's plenty of evidence to show real benefits of keeping hydrated and drinking lots during the day to help stay alert, improve concentration and prevent problems such as headaches and constipation. That's why we're encouraging children to carry water bottles with them so they can stay refreshed throughout the school day."

Schools can apply for the bottles on Severn Trent's website at www.stwater.co. uk/drinktothink Teachers or parents can apply online for the bottles, but the scheme is only open to Year One pupils. More bottles can be bought at a subsidised price for pupils in other year groups.

Mr Allder added: "And we are delighted with the support we've seen from schools who are keen to encourage students to drink more water rather than choose fizzy, sugary drinks.

"We're hoping that carrying a water bottle will become part and parcel of school's daily routine and we are sure the children will feel more healthy as a result."
