DESPITE a bone-dry summer, flower, fruit and vegetable growers turned out a bumper crop of award winners.

There were flower shows in both Claines in Worcester and at Droitwich, with thousands of entries between both the shows.

Entrants had spent days carefully preparing their produce.

Krista Jerrold, of Claines Royal British Legion Flower Show, said their event had been hotly contested with more entrants this year than last.

The winner of the President’s Shield for most points was Dan Robb with 89 points, while Tina Rimmel won the Rose Bowl for the ladies’ entries with 29 points.

The children’s section was won by Lucy Goode.

Mrs Jerrold said: “The show went very well and I would say the standard was high considering the dry summer we have had and then the heavy rain just before the show.

“We had about 40 exhibitors with most having multiple entries in the many different classes and the competition was keen between the expert gardeners.

“I do know that we had more exhibitors than last year.”

The 63rd Droitwich Spa and District Horticultural Society annual open flower show was held in the town’s leisure centre.

Val Jancey, society secretary, said: “The weather has been terrible for growers this year, but despite that we’ve had more than 500 entrants, and that’s smashing – that’s more than we had last year.”
