CUPS of tea were supped and cakes were scoffed across Worcestershire yesterday in the name of charity.

More than 600 events were held throughout the county for Macmillan Cancer Support’s nationwide annual fund-raising coffee morning.

The Guildhall in Worcester was a serene scene of relaxation as visitors enjoyed a spot of reflexology along with their cuppas.

Worcester Mayor Councillor David Tibbutt said the fine weather helped to attract a good turnout.

He said: “It was a wonderful day and there was a very good show of support for Macmillan.

“We know a lot of people who have had great benefit from the work of the charity and there is no doubt they produce a very valuable personal service.

“Macmillan is one of the key charities in its field and we must perpetually support it. I’m sure with the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning we will have put some more coppers into their coffers.”

Little ones also did their bit at Lyppard Grange, as the community centre in Warndon Villages, Worcester, incorporated its toddler morning with the event.

With cakes donated by Tesco, they raised £100 for Macmillan in two days.

Assistant manager Simone Turner said: “It was lovely and everyone did really well.

“We often do support different charities and obviously Macmillan is an important one with how the world is today.”

A tremendous effort by staff at Volkerlaser in London Road, Worcester, saw more than £1,200 raised through a raffle and headshave.

Marketing manager Lily Blueman said it was the first time they had held an event such as this.

“It’s such a good cause,” she said. “One in three people are affected by cancer, so it’s a real cause for everyone.”

Kelly Whitehouse, Macmillan fund-raising manager for Worcestershire, praised the efforts of everyone who had organised or taken part in a coffee morning.

“We have had more than 600 coffee mornings taking places simultaneously [across Worcestershire] today,” she said.

“It’s been an absolutely fantastic year. I think I can safely say it has been the biggest and best ever.”
