A MEMORIAL dedicated to fallen heroes from Worcestershire, who were killed in conflicts since the Second World War, has been unveiled in Worcester’s Guildhall.

The semi-circular, 3ft wide and 1.5ft high plaque is made of oak with gold-plated lettering and is finished with French polishing.

It bears the words: “In honoured memory of the citizens of Worcestershire who have given their lives in the service of their country since 1945. We will remember them.”

It was unveiled in the lower hall yesterday above a panel where the names of those who served in the First World War are already in place.

The £2,840 plaque has the full backing of the Royal British Legion.

Alan Amos, Labour city and county councillor, who campaigned for the plaque since January 2010, said: “We can be proud that Worcestershire is the only county with such a memorial.”

The memorial was initially proposed to honour the county’s dead since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Paid for by Worcestershire County Council, the memorial was originally earmarked for County Hall in Spetchley Road, Worcester, but it was decided a more central location was needed.
