A POPULAR landlady died in “fantastically rare” circumstances just days after falling over in her high heels on a night out, an inquest has heard.

Sian Thomas, who ran the Berkeley Arms pub in Spetchley, fell and banged her knee in Mode nightclub in Worcester while out at a colleague’s leaving party on June 6.

She collapsed and died two days later.

In a statement read out at an inquest at Worcestershire Coroners Court in Stourport, the 38-year-old’s then boyfriend, Robert McCairn, described how Miss Thomas was in “agony” the day after her fall.

She attended accident and emergency at the Royal at about 10am on June 7 where she was seen by A&E consultant Rosemary Johnson.

Giving evidence, Ms Johnson said Miss Thomas, who grew up in south Wales, had a bruised and swollen knee but no broken bones and there were no external signs of blood clots.

She advised her to take the normal course of action with such injuries, including resting and elevating her leg and taking painkillers if needed.

A pathology report revealed Miss Thomas had developed deep vein thrombosis in her left leg from not being able to move it.

This led to a blood clot which went into her lungs and passed through a hole in her heart, before entering her brain.

Ms Johnson said such clots would normally be filtered out in the lungs, but the hole had enabled it to pass through.

She described the circumstances as “fantastically rare”, stating she had never seen it occur in her 15 years as an A&E consultant.

Speaking at the inquest, Miss Thomas’s mother, Alice, who was supported by several members of her family, described her daughter as dedicated to her job, friends and family.

“She was the best,” said Mrs Thomas.

“She was kind, caring, supportive, and very dedicated to her job, friends and family.

“She had an excellent character – not a flaw.

“I accept these things happen.

“She was a good girl and it’s a great loss.”

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Geraint Williams said Miss Thomas’s death was “dreadfully tragic”.
