HEREFORD United director of football Gary Peters has slammed the Football Association of Wales for refusing to allow on-loan keeper David Cornell to play in Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Yeovil Town.

The young custodian is in the Wales Under 21s squad to face Armenia in a European Championship qualifier the following Tuesday.

Yet, despite Brian Flynn’s side not playing over the weekend and the Bulls being without a fit keeper for the first-round clash, the FAW insist Cornell joins them for a walking expedition.

Peters said he tried to reason with the former Swansea boss but had no joy in getting Cornell released.

He explained: “You try talking to Brian Flynn and common sense is not part of the job description.

“They (the Welsh FA) don’t mind what they do or who they hurt. They’re just bothered about, ‘can’t do it’, ‘not allowed to’ and ‘he’s got to come with us’.

“Someone like Brian should know better, he’s been a league manager himself. They are just being ignorant.”

But Flynn said Cornell is going because of his displays for the Bulls and, with Wales still hoping to qualify, the ex-Wrexham boss is adamant the Swansea keeper will fly out with the rest of the squad.

Flynn said: “We are travelling on the Friday. I’m not picking David to be selfish. I am picking him because he is a good player.”

With Adam Bartlett and player-coach Russell Hoult injured, it is difficult for the Bulls to bring in another keeper for a cup game. Peters added: “Clubs in League One and Two won’t lend us anyone and Premier League clubs still don’t want their keepers cup-tied.

“Some of the keepers from non-league, who we might have a chance with, are cup-tied so we’ve got no keeper.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Steve Leslie has extended his loan spell at Edgar Street from Shrewsbury by a further month.

Non-contract veteran defender Andy Todd has been released despite impressing in his brief spell.
