LEON West says that he has no intention of taking over from his brother Paul on a permanent basis at Evesham United.

In the wake of Paul West’s departure following the 3-1 defeat at home to Barwell, Leon, who was the assistant manager at the Robins, has stepped up to be the caretaker boss for Saturday’s Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division trip to Cambridge City.

With a full strength squad to choose from, Leon says that the players are ‘gutted’ by his brother’s resignation after more than five years at the helm.

“I have spoken to some of the senior players and we have our first training session since Saturday tonight,” the caretaker manager said.

“We will go to Cambridge at the weekend and give it our best shot, but we are all gutted that Paul has gone.”

With chairman Jim Cockerton hoping to have a new man in place ahead of next Sunday’s visit from Hitchin Town, Leon says that he will not be throwing his hat into the ring for the vacancy.

“I suppose it is a unique situation, because when the manager goes, the assistant usually wants the job,” Leon said. “But I have no interest whatsoever in going for it.

“I’ll be in charge, along with Michael Brennan, on Saturday and we’ll go from there.

“Paul has left me to it, but we think a like anyway. We have got some good experienced players here and we will be looking for a response.”

The defeat to Barwell left the Robins second-from-bottom in the table, but a victory at Cambridge could potentially lift Evesham out of the relegation zone.
