EVESHAM United begin a new chapter in the club’s history tomorrow with a trip to Cambridge City (3pm).

The Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division strugglers are reeling from the resignation of manager Paul West after five years at the helm.

He stepped down following last Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Barwell which left the Robins second-from-bottom in the table.

Brother Leon, assistant during West’s tenure, and coach Michael Brennan will take charge of the Cambridge match and are looking for the team to step up to the plate.

Evesham have lost their last three league matches but the players have an opportunity to impress potential new managers.

Leon West has stated he does not want to replace his sibling permanently and chairman Jim Cockerton hopes to have appointed a successor in time for the following Sunday’s league visit of Hitchin Town to their temporary home at St George’s Lane.

“We will go to Cambridge at the weekend and give it our best shot, but we are all gutted that Paul has gone,” the caretaker boss admitted.

“I suppose it is a unique situation because, when the manager goes, the assistant usually wants the job. But I have no interest whatsoever in going for it.

“I’ll be in charge, along with Michael, tomorrow and we’ll go from there. Paul has left me to it, but we think alike anyway.

“We have some good, experienced players here and will be looking for a response.”

Meanwhile, Stourport Swifts visit Bideford in Division One South and West tomorrow (3pm) bidding to build on last Saturday’s 2-1 home success against Wimborne Town which was only their second league victory of the season.
