TWO teenagers were viciously assaulted in Worcester as they made their way home in the early hours of the morning.

Detectives from Worcester CID are investigating after the pair - a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old female - were set upon near Gheluvelt Park, in Barbourne Road, on Sunday morning.

They were approached by a group of four young men who stopped directly in front of them and asked for a cigarette.

When the boy told them he didn’t have any, they demanded he hand over his valuables. He refused and one of the group punched him in the mouth, splitting his lip. A second man then head-butted him, causing further facial injuries.

As he was being assaulted, his friend tried to defend him and she was also punched in the mouth by one of the men. Her iPhone was then snatched away from her hand and the four men ran off down Sunnyside Road.

The first attacker was described as white, aged between 18-21, about 6ft tall and skinny. He was wearing a white t-shirt with buttons on it.

The second offender was also white and a similar age, of medium build and between 5ft 6ins to 5ft 8ins. He was topless and had no chest hair.

Detective Constable Kirsty Hickling, who is investigating the incident, said: "This was a completely unprovoked and unpleasant assault against two young people who were simply on their way home after a night out.

"I would like to appeal for anyone who has seen this group of young men in the Barbourne Road area or who recognises their descriptions to contact Worcester CID."

Anyone with information should call DC Hickling on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
