MORE than 4,000 people have signed up to take part in Free Radio’s first Walk of Worcestershire tomorrow.
A total of 4,156 people have signed up for the 10.5-mile walk from the Three Counties Showground in Malvern to Worcester Racecourse to raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice.
But many people have are feeling concerned after there was a delay in sending out the official packs to walkers, with some people receiving them as late as yesterday.
Jessica Chadwick, marketing assistant at Free Radio, said there was a delay in sending out the packs following a problem with the delivery company.
She said everyone should receive their packs by today. She said: “We’d like to apologise to people for the delay. If anyone doesn’t receive their pack, all the necessary information is online.
“Sponsorship forms and the justgiving page, are all on the website, you just need your walker number. There’s no need to worry, people can also turn up and register on the day.”
Thirty members of staff from Hereford and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) will be among those taking part in the walk.
They will be raising funds for Acorns and the Fire Fighters Charity.
Among them will be Team HWFRS, a group made up of senior fire officers and managers, including chief fire officer Mark Yates, who work from service headquarters in Charles Hastings Way, Worcester.
The miles they walk will also count towards the fire service’s FireFit Challenge – a national project to encourage fire service staff and those in the wider community to get more active ahead of this year’s Olympic Games.
Locally, HWFRS is aiming to complete 5,250 miles in total during the course of its FireFit Challenge, the equivalent mileage the Olympic Torch would travel from Beijing to London.
Watch commander Carl Pearson said: “So far, there are 29 members of staff from the service taking part in the walk, which will mean more than 300 miles towards our FireFit total and hopefully a significant sum of money raised for the two charities we are supporting.”
