PEOPLE all over Worcestershire were putting the kettle on for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday.

They were among thousands having a warming drink in the 22nd event held by Macmillan Cancer Support in an attempt to above and beyond the total of 51,000 people who took part last year and raised a record £10 million to help people living with cancer.

The city’s mayor Roger Berry lent his support to the coffee morning when he hosted an event in the grand surroundings of the Guildhall from 9.30am to noon, saying “there were plenty of people coming through the doors to join us.”

He said the event had raised “about £150”.

“It was, as ever, well supported, and I wanted to thank the organiser from Macmillan Valerie Warren and all those who came along to help such a worthy cause.”

Others waking up and smelling the coffee were Blooms Worcester Garden Centre, in Droitwich Road, where green fingered customers could enjoy a drink in return for a donation from 9am until noon, raising £274.

Andy Morton, manager of the garden centre, said: “We held the coffee morning to help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and it was a great success. Lots of people from the area came along to the event and helped us support this worthy cause.

“The restaurant was constantly full during the entire morning and we are really happy with the response we’ve had.”

About 50 Gym goers at Nuffield Health, Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, in Perdiswell, took time out from their health routine to muscle up a sum of £105 with more funds coming in.
