IF you like Chinese food, you can’t go far wrong with Ruby Cantonese Restaurant in St John’s, Worcester. My companion and I paid a visit to the Bransford Road eatery on a chilly Wednesday night and we were pleasantly surprised to see the dining area was full to capacity.

On arrival, there was a slight mix-up with our reservation, but the waiting staff quickly rectified the issue and showed us to our table.

I’ve eaten at Ruby’s once before, but its kitsch retro interior and the babble of contented diners has a familiarity to it, almost like a gathering at the home of a friend or relative.

It offers an all-you-can-eat menu, which costs £13.50 for adults Sunday to Thursday, and £14.50 Friday to Saturday.

We were handed an extensive menu, which invites you to choose four items for starters and three items for mains to share between two or three people. If you finish those and fancy an extra bite, there’s an option to order more or different selections.

We also plumped for quarter of a duck, an additional £4.75.

Desserts are extra too, costing between £2 to £3.

Our first starter – Pork Yuk Sung – arrived within minutes, and was quickly demolished by us both.

The satay chicken skewers were succulent and moreish, while the crispy won ton had a wonderful crunch and were accompanied by a delicious sweet and sour sauce. Sadly, the prawn toast was a little soggy, but the quarter duck, served with soft wraps, aromatic plum sauce, and batons of cucumber and spring onion, more than made up for this.

Our mains – sizzling chicken with garlic, wine and chilli sauce, and crispy shredded beef accompanied with egg fried rice – were also very enjoyable.

We were both so full after our banquet, we decided not to order dessert.

Although Ruby’s offers all-youcan- eat, we found the portions to be plentiful, well cooked and served quickly, with meals cooked to order rather than offered as a buffet.

The meal was also great value for money, costing £37.25 for two to eat with a glass of wine and a pint of beer.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Ruby Cantonese and have no doubt we will return in the future in greater numbers.
