A BUSINESS in Worcestershire has received national recognition at an awards ceremony.

Staff from Matthews City and Country Homes, based in Mount Flirt, Broadwas, recently attended the Royal Town Planning Institute’s Awards for Planning Excellence in London.

The firm’s development of 35 homes at Burlingham Square was shortlisted as one of nine national finalists in the category of excellence in planning for homes.

Judges had a tough role as the calibre of entries was considered extremely high – with shortlisted developments ranging from affordable housing regeneration schemes in central London to sympathetic housing schemes on the edge of rural settlements.

Although missing out on the award, Matthews was given a commendation for its entry, with the judging panel saying it had adopted “a strong community engagement strategy”.

Chris Matthews, director of the firm, said: “At Matthews City and Country Homes we were very proud to have been shortlisted for such a prestigious award.

“The standard of entrants in this category was exceptional; as such, it was a huge honour for us that Burlingham Square was awarded a commended entry by the RTPI’s judging panel.

“As was noted, planners were vitally important in the success of this scheme as they helped coordinate and lead on such a complex proposal.

“We would like to say a special thanks to Worcester City Council’s planning department for their input within the scheme; particularly with their help and support in overcoming the hurdles we faced along the way.

“We would also like to thank our appointed consultants and partners during the development process.

“Furthermore, to receive recognition for the creation of multiple apprenticeships was extra special.

“As a local, family run house builder, we care passionately about our local area and the homes that we build.

“Apprentices are a great way to provide a wider community benefit as it gives younger members of society the opportunity to gain new skills and experiences whilst positively contributing to the delivery of fantastic family homes.”
