IT wouldn’t be the Old Tollhouse, at the junctions of Worcester’s Ombersley and Droitwich roads, if there wasn’t a door in the picture somewhere.

But most of timber has now been tidied away as this high-profile building takes on its seasonal role as a Christmas grotto.

Inside are all the festive goodies Father Christmas or even Ebenezer Scrooge could wish for, with the interior of the shop transformed as if the Christmas Fairy had waved her magic wand.

For 30 years the premises has been run as an antique furniture business by Derek and Meryl Askew, and possibly best known for its eclectic collection of old doors stacked outside.

However, for the last 10 years, the couple have also been making and buying hand-crafted Christmas decorations.

And while they are away at trade shows all over the country, son Simon is holding the fort at the Tollhouse Christmas Grotto.

“The place has had a complete makeover,” he said. “And we will be open until Christmas Day selling garlands, wreaths, tree hangers and much, much more, including hand-dipped cinnamon candles with a seasonal berry mix, which are specially made by my mother Meryl Askew and provide all the traditional smells of Christmas.”

So if you see a sleigh and team of reindeer parked outside it won’t necessarily be Santa buying a new door for his grotto... because he could be inside looking for a seasonal smell that has nothing to do with Rudolph.
