EMPLOYEES from Worcestershire express delivery company TNT really had the fund-raising bit between their teeth when they raised enough money to feed and educate 1,400 malnourished African youngsters.

Staff at TNT’s Hartlebury Trading Estate depot helped deliver a £35,000 boost to the company’s support for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) during a five-day Fight Hunger Week initiative.

The money will provide half-a-million meals for impoverished boys and girls in Tanzania for the next 12 months, with big-hearted employees at the Hartlebury Trading Estate depot in Hartlebury playing their part.

One of the highlights of the Fight Hunger campaign was the creation of a taste of Africa, courtesy of one of the UK’s leading chefs.

Former Michelin-starred chef Andy Waters served up an authentic Tanzanian meal to employees to help give an insight as to how the children survive on just one meal a day.

“I’m delighted to be helping TNT in its Fight Hunger campaign – it’s a privilege to be able to play a part in helping hungry kids get a vital meal a day that can potentially mean the difference between life and death,” he said.

Adrian Avery, general manager at TNT Worcester, said: “The WFP do wonderful work in Tanzania and it’s incredible to think that a child can be fed and educated for just £25 a year.

“Our Fight Hunger Week activities are designed to raise money, but also awareness of the need to combat global hunger.

“It’s a horrifying fact, but a child dies every five seconds from hunger and hunger-related diseases and we are just trying to do our bit to help.”
