MY Fair Point columns have always tried to avoid commenting on celebrities and their misdemeanours as I have always said far too much time is spent on this in the mainstream media, when there are far bigger issues to concentrate on.

But it has been hard to avoid these celebrity stories in recent days after Jamie Carragher's suspension from Sky for spitting last week, and now Ant McPartlin's arrest on suspicion of drink-driving.

Since I first heard about the incident I was conflicted, and I still am now.

On the one hand I have sympathy for the star. It is obvious he needs at least a year off now, after rushing back far too quick after receiving treatment for drink and prescription drug addictions last summer.

He is only human, has been battling depression, and heading to rehab and not being involved in anymore episodes of the popular show Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (SNT) is the right thing to do.

However there is no defence for his alleged drink driving.

It has been claimed he drove his mini on Sunday, with his mum as a passenger inside, and was involved in a head on collision with another car carrying a family. A four-year-old was later taken to hospital for checks.

This could have been a far more serious incident and if it isn't the spark to make McPartlin turn his life around, then nothing will be.

ITV chiefs unsurprisingly moved quickly to pull McPartlin from the SNT show, particularly as he is likely to appear in court shortly.

There are no winners in any of this. The presenter's life is obviously in turmoil, while a family will have been shaken but relieved to be alive after the crash.

The team behind the scenes who obviously work hard on all the Ant and Dec shows will be losing out if they end up being cancelled.

Britain's Got Talent, which was due to air in mid-April, has to be in doubt now.

And what of co-presenter Declan Donnelly? They come as a team, so he could be faced with a decision to either go it alone, or as part of a new double act.

The latest report is he will attempt to present the final episode of SNT, due to be live in Florida, on his own. Presumably how that goes will play a major factor in how ITV proceed with other Ant and Dec scheduled series this year, such as I'm a Celebrity.
