SIR – Peter Jewell’s letter saying we do not want to be a federal state of Europe is right on (Worcester News, January 29).

As Mr Jewell says, we want to be trading partners, but we do not want Brussels to overcontrol our lives.

Now it is easy to see why the Americans are so passionate about states’ rights.

They demand a proper balance, which is something we do not have in our relationship with Europe.

We should not want out of the EU. We should work towards a proper balance.

Separately, our politicians need to quit being so soft on migrants. We give too much away.

Why do so many migrants risk life and limb to get to the UK, as opposed to settling elsewhere in Europe?

Clearly the reason is that we are far too generous, the result being that we cause many of the migrant problems ourselves.
