SIR – So Mr [David] Cameron has pledged to offer the people a referendum on the EU.

About time, but he had little choice. If he had not he would have been voted out at the next election.

But can we trust him to deliver or like the Tory party of 1973, will these be just words?

The public must not fall into this trap again and should view the PM’s pledge with suspicion.

David Cameron is a fan of the EU, let’s be in no doubt on this, but he is being squeezed to offer something to remain in power.

But is what he is offering enough to appease the public?
