SIR – It was interesting to read the report by Tom Edwards and your Comment (Worcester News, February 4) on Worcester City Council’s scrutiny committee meeting, when Dr Frances Howie, the assistant director of public health at NHS Worcestershire, discussed obesity.

Luckily for me I have no problem. Though once a keen sportsman, I am now aged nearly 81 and suffering with Parkinson’s dIsease.

However, I have managed to maintain my weight at 10st 3lbs since the age of 17.

A few stretching floor exercises before breakfast and a two to three mile walk after (weather permitting) keep me feeling fine.

Even a shopping trip with the better half can have its benefit as my pedometer once registered three miles.

I always use the stairs instead of the lift if possible, and even though I have a bus pass I prefer to walk if possible.

There is no need to spend money on gym fees as for four years I have attended aquafit classes.

The non-straining exercises available (which would have been excellent for keeping fit when I played football and badminton, etc) and the pleasant company of up to 20 ladies helps to maintain me in good health.

In the today’s society with its obsession on car travel and lack of exercise, I wish Dr Howie all the luck she will need.
