SIR – Regarding the latest scandals involving horsemeat being found in various supermarket convenience ready meals, the old adage, “You only get what you pay for” rings true.

I, for one, cannot quite comprehend why anyone would want to buy frozen beef burgers, spaghetti bolognese, lasagne, etc, from our supposedly fantastic ‘value for money’ supermarkets in the first place.

I’m sorry to say I can only put it down to laziness.

Home-made bolognese sauce is one of the easiest things in the world to make.

It may be a few pence more to buy the ingredients, it may take a few more minutes of your precious time to make, but you will know exactly what ingredients have gone in to it, the country of origin for the meat, when and where it was made and, for sure, it will taste a whole lot better than a ready-made meal.

I am lucky enough to have a butcher a mile down the road from where I live.

My butchers are very knowledgeable and know exactly how many days their beef has been hung for and believe me it makes a big difference.

I know for sure that their pork is free range and that their pigs do actually have a life as it is possible to cycle past their animals roaming freely in the fields.

I use their sausage meat and free range eggs to make Lorraine Pascale’s homemade scotch eggs. Simply divine with a bit of mustard.
