SIR – Pope Benedict XVI has had the sense to tender his resignation despite a 600- year-old tradition that he should continue till death.
Our Queen Elizabeth II has loyally served her subjects since 1952 in a system which also expects her to continue for life. Wouldn’t it be nice if she abdicated and was left to enjoy a well-earned retirement, especially as her consort is not in the best of health. Who would blame her?
