SIR – Fenella Gerry’s article on attracting wildlife into your garden was very informative (Worcester News, June 26).

However, the one point that she did not address was access for mammals, particularly hedgehogs.

Hedgehog numbers are falling at present due to a variety of factors, one of which is habitat fragmentation.

A major cause of this in built-up areas is the use of concrete gravel boards at the bottom of fences as these prevent hedgehogs from getting from garden to garden, which they need to do to get sufficient food.

Hedgehogs are very versatile and can climb, dig and squeeze through gaps about four inches in diameter so it is often possible to create some form of entrance for them without causing damage to the fencing.

A little bit of DIY may enable these professional slug-munchers to get into your wildlife friendly garden and do their bit for pest control.

They would also appreciate a bit of supplementary feeding with hedgehog or cat food.
