Sir - I share the delight of the Wychavon Parishes Action Group that plans to build a huge intensive chicken farm at Upton Snodsbury have been rejected ("Protesters' joy over chicken city victory", WN, January 15th).

Local campaigners are right to be concerned about the environmental and health dangers posed by the broiler farm and consideration also has to be given to the appalling suffering of the tens of thousands of chickens crammed into the buildings.

However, although the residents of Upton Snodsbury may be able to breathe a sigh of relief, at least for the time being, these horrific broiler units will continue to be built elsewhere (and in somebody else's backyard) while people continue to create a demand for them by consuming the chickens they produce.

Yet another reason to go vegetarian or, better still, vegan!
