SIR, The party game called 'Carrington Bridge' could be won by laying a road alongside the bridge at ground level, avoiding the astronomically expensive (and unlikely) project of widening the bridge. This would reduce traffic congestion 98 per cent of the time. During the possible 2 per cent of the time when the new road was flooded, traffic would just have to 'grin and bear it', a small sacrifice for the ease of the 98 per cent.
