SIR - A good letter was written in a national newspaper by a 85-year-old logical thinking gentleman, Mr J Griffin, of Castle Bromwich, which certainly gives an enlightened new view on global warming.

He asks if rocket scientists may be responsible for this serious problem? Every time a spaceship is sent into orbit and again on re-entry, a large hole is burned in the ozone layer. This re-seals itself, but in so doing draws in from the Poles causing thinning in these areas, hence global warming.

During the 19th and 20th centuries we had millions of industrial and domestic chimney's belching out noxious fumes and there was no global warming problem in those days. It seems to be a purely space age phenomena.

I certainly endorse his views.
