SIR - Peter Scott appears to be proud of the fact that the House of Lords has now effectively, in many matters, recognised that the European Court of Justice is the supreme arbiter for deciding matters of law (February 11). In other words, our Government elected by us can be overruled by a foreign judiciary.

Also, as Mr Scott suggests, we should look at particular issues; let us consider some other matters of law.

Pan-European arrest warrants can be issued for activities which are in fact not illegal in this country but a British citizen resident in this country could still face arrest.

An armed European Gendarmerie is being set up and our Government cannot promise that the members of this armed police force will not be allowed to enter this country to arrest British citizens.

We cannot deport EU citizens who have broken the law (including murder) because it would be against their rights as defined by a European Court.

MARK STARR, Worcester.
