SIR – I refer to your article (August 27) which identifies the closure of the post office at the Bilford Road junction with Astwood Road.

This pleasant and friendly post office which serves a local residential area is ideally located for pedestrians.

There is a main bus stop directly outside the premises.

One specific issue which seems not to have even been considered, let alone addressed whatsoever by the post office or Government, relates to sustainability in respect to modes of travel.

I assumed we were to get out of our vehicles and walk, based on all the information I receive as a local councillor.

No doubt the closure will lead to additional journeys by car to other post offices.

These premises are ideally located to cater for this primary residential area which benefits a large number of retired people who can at present walk to this facility.

To take away this community post office will no doubt lead to many people not being able to visit the proposed remaining post offices on foot and for the many who do not drive they will be further isolated in there own homes.

The article suggests that the present occupiers don’t mind the closure but I would argue that the community does not agree.

This post office in located within St Stephen Ward of which I, together with Keith Burton are the elected city councillors and we both cannot support its closure.

COUN GARETH JONES,

Worcester.
