SIR – Recent letters from George Cowley, J R Reynolds and John Norwood seen to indicate that some pensioners are doing reasonably well money-wise.

I have never had a car. I am very grateful for my free bus pass.

I have forgotten when I last bought an item of furniture. I think of John Norwood’s comment on kettles. I think I have bought two in 40 years. I wear second hand clothes.

I am thankful to the WRVS for providing me with meals-on-wheels five days a week. The other two days I dine at pensioners’ clubs. I do not smoke, I drink a lot – milk and water.

However, I am not a jealous man. I rejoice that some elderly folk, such as Messrs Cowley, Reynolds and Norwood are apparently better off than I.

Are they more deserving than me? How can I tell?

D E MARGRETT, Worcester.
