SIR – I am bewildered by local democracy.

I was under the impression that the county council and city council were run for us by our democratically elected representatives. However, I see that we pay £100,000 a year for someone to manage roads but he can be spared half a week without a need to be replaced because there’s not enough for him to do.

The councillors who queried this decision didn’t seem to be aware it had been made.

I am glad our roads are sorted, although the headlines of November 5, “Traffic chaos throughout city because of road works”

hardly seems to do that.

Although I see the worthy Councillor Prodger says it’s all right I’m on the case.

Perhaps he knew that the person responsible was only a part-timer.

RICHARD BIRD,

Worcester.
