SIR – Jon Burgess and I appear to have got into a kind of conversation about his love of killing small animals for pleasure.

I do wish, though, that he wouldn’t use my comments to make his case seem more plausible.

The fact that the hunting fraternity is probably still breaking the law out of sight of the authorities does not mean the law should be changed, but the huntsmen should be honourable enough to obey it rather than going against the majority of public opinion.

I would still like to know why deer hunting and hare coursing, together with bear baiting, dog fighting, badger baiting and bull baiting (which was how the Bull Ring in St John’s got its name) have all been stopped, but still fox hunting continues.
