SIR – I was not able to attend the Upton flood defences public meeting but I enclose an extract from my letter to Anthony Perry at the Environment Agency: “When I came to the exhibition I was very struck by the fact that the proposal seemed to be flood relief for Tunnel Hill road (out of Ledbury and Gloucester) which does not need or warrant it but none on the Hanley Road which patently does.

“I have gathered since that flood relief for Hanley Road is considered to be very costly and may entail raising the road and badly affecting the residential properties there.

“Why not spend money on continuing the wall along the river front? Or why not spend money on using the present flood prevention device in use on the other side of the bridge? Certainly why waste public resources on spending anything on the Tunnel Hill road?

“Now I read that a company is suggesting an alternative device which it was felt (from the press) the EA does not wish to be drawn on. Why not properly research this option for both sides of the bridge? The Hanley Road is a strategic route into and out of the town.”

WENDY HANDS,
Upton-upon-Severn.
