SIR – I have just returned from a holiday in Malta. There was a group of mainly German people staying in our hotel who were members of CABS (Campaign Against Bird Slaughter).

On returning home, I looked at their website Komitee.de, to find out more. I was absolutely horrified to find out that Maltese poachers are killing birds on a daily basis on a huge scale and the volunteers are trying to stop this. They are killing various types of hawks, falcons and buzzards, also herons and kingfishers. On one day recently (September 20), 137 dead birds were found.

I had no idea this was going on and certainly would not have gone to Malta on holiday if I had known. (I was sitting on my hotel balcony one day listening to gunshot).

More awareness should be made. This must be stopped and we need to do more to help. I have signed the RSPB petition on line. I urge other readers to do the same.
