SIR – The permanent enclosure of Hartlebury common land is not the answer to its management.

The associated fencing, cattlegrids and mandatory increased road signage will indeed blight the landscape and do very little (if indeed anything) to actually enhance the management of the common land.

Cattle grids are extremely dangerous to road users, especially cyclists, motorcyclists and horse and riders. Cattle grids are also not a foolproof way of enclosing cattle or sheep who do pass over these.

Forcing cattle to continuously graze areas ruins the land, it doesn’t enhance it any way. It will be inaccessible to walkers in the winter as are many areas of Castlemorton Common which are grazed by cattle all year round. Cattle do not eat the scrub down (as can be witnessed on Castlemorton Common). Cattle graze, they do not browse, and the pictures shown with the story on September 29 suggest their is nothing for the cattle to graze.

This scheme will be a complete waste of money and achieve nothing for the management of the commonland. I suggest those who are in charge of this land’s management use some common sense.
