SIR – Who in their right mind believes the bus corridor scheme for Bromyard Road will reduce traffic congestion?

Furthermore, who believes it can be achieved without having a negative impact on other vehicles?

Highways bosses may insist that it can be done without slowing down other motorists, but they would say that.

Surely if buses are to get priority over other vehicles along the length of Bromyard Road, starting at Broadway Grove where new traffic lights will give them priority over queueing traffic, it can only be to the disadvantage of other users.

No doubt there will be some phoney public consultation exercise where only the minority pro-bus lobby’s views are respected, but if the public were to be given the opportunity of a vote the scheme would be overwhelmingly rejected.

So, who actually wants this scheme and in whose name is the £3 million expenditure being squandered? The popularity of the Perdiswell park and ride scheme is proof enough of the lack of support for public transport strategies without more ill-conceived schemes. There are many better uses to which £3 million could be put – the Bull Ring Island could be improved.

By continually frittering away the odd million here and there on mindless park and ride and bus priority schemes we will never be able to afford the only scheme which is worthwhile – completion of the northern ring road.
