SIR – Gillian Hames is quite right to condemn the killing of wild birds in Malta, but she advocates signing a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds petition.

Does she know the RSPB supports the mass slaughter of the ruddy duck in this country and also allows the shooting of wildfowl on its so-called bird sanctuaries.

The excuse offered for allowing shooting on its reserves is that it could not police a ban and therefore it is better to allow it, thus giving the RSPB some control. This is like saying let people drink-and-drive as it is so hard to stop everyone who does, not a very clever idea. Best to try and only have some success than not try at all.
