Sir – John Shearon (Letters, November 25) is confused about public opinion and democracy in this country.

There have been a few opinion polls which claim a majority favour the criminalisation of hunting, but after independent examination most were found to be at best questionable regarding their accuracy.

If our country was governed by public opinion polls alone then we would not have fought a war in Iraq or Afghanistan and Gordon Brown would certainly not be Prime Minister.

We pay politicians to make decisions on our behalf and occasionally they get it right. With the Hunting Act, New Labour defiantly got it wrong and became so obsessed over the ban they forgot what really matters such as jobs, clean hospitals and affordable housing. Unbelievably, Labour now intend to make hunting a major theme of their general election campaign. Isn’t it about time Labour MPs such as Mike Foster dropped their fixation with hunting for once and started fixing our hospitals?
